Korean Babyboomer & Korean Architecture
In the modern Korean history, Baby Boomers(born in 1953-1962) are the generations who have experienced the both extreme sides in their lifetime; from the postwar poverty hours to the economic development boom’s time in 70s~80s, from resisting the tyranny of the military government to opening the democratic government, from growing up in Korean Folk Culture and Confucian Values to Capitalist Era of mass culture in the sudden globalization flow. Korean Baby Boomers has lived in all the maelstroms of Korean Modern History, but did not seem to have their own Cultural Keywords or Colors which represents themselves unlike Generation X or Generation 486.
What is the Korean Architecture? The Korean traditional and folk architecture has been disappeared in the course of industrialization and modernization. But it still remains as the spirit of the Korean Architecture. Also, with changed lifestyle, imported Western-Styled Architecture became the big flow in Korean built environment in a short time of the past half-century. Defining "What the Korean Architecture is." in the chaotic diversity seems impossible.
Korean Baby Boomers which called "Ggin Sedae" and Korean Architecture is similar to in this respect.
Architect's Proposal
The Client couple who is bone in 1961 and 1962 has worked as an insurance executive and Board of Education Superintendent. Like typical Baby Boomer Generation, they left countryside to the cities to get education and job opportunity in child hood. Overcoming the poverty of his childhood and looking straight ahead in a rapidly changing environment, he and she met the time to prepare retirement. Planning for life after their retirement is firstly leaving the city and building a new nest on countryside. The impression I got in first meeting with the Client was 'uneasiness' in expression of themselves. For them, social standards like graduated school, social position, social relationship are clear to express, but their own tastes, tendency, and style which are refined with experience and time are clumsy to show. Would it be common to the Baby Boomer Generation?
Designing the house, I confirmed that the spectrum of experience they have in their lifetime is extensively wider than any other generation have in the history of Korea. Conversely, the self-refining process for the experience seems to be missing in the busy life. Otherwise, generation after Baby Boomer had a variety of pop culture and leisure in economic freedom and could create their own culture which is representing their generation. Meanwhile, looking back at them retire maybe the spectrum of experience and organize their lives would not be the time to rule? Perhaps the rule will be indicative of the degree, not black and white debate.
As the architect, I suggested the key word 'penetration' and 'flexibility' for the house to the Baby Boomers Client. 'Penetration'; searching themselves with a journey of experience across multiple time, 'Flexibility'; enjoying a variety of recreation in a limited space. Through the keywords, for people who engage in that space can refine themselves.
Client wants to be remembered as a cool grandpa to his future grandchildren. He hopes that the memory in grandpa house is special for them. This hope can be come true in the time looking back their life and revealing their charm.
I hope that Grandpa's Cool House can help the client to solve the late lifetime homework.
베이비부머와 한국건축
한국현대사에서 베이비부머(1953~1962)세대들은 인생에 걸쳐 양극단의 상황을 경험한 세대 들이다. 전후의 빈곤의 시간에서 경제개발의 호황의 시기를, 군부의 독재정치에 저항해서 민주 정부를 열었고, 토속적 한국문화와 유교적 가치관 속에서 자랐지만 어느새 세계화 흐름 속에 자본주의적 대중문화와 무가치관의 시대에 살고 있다. 베이비부머 세대는 한국현대사의 소용돌이를 모두 관통해 존재하지만 486세대나 X세대와 달리 그들을 대표하는 문화적 키워드나 색깔을 가지고 있지 못한 것처럼 보인다.
한국적 건축이란 무엇일까? 근대화와 산업화의 과정에서 전통적 혹은 토속적 한국건축은 대부분이 사라졌지만 한국건축의 원류로써 여전히 존재한다. 지난 반세기의 짧은 시간동안 새로이 도입된 서구의 건축 역시 한국의 변화된 라이프 스타일과 그 괘를 함께하며 한국의 건축에서 큰 흐름으로 자리하고 있다. 이렇게 혼돈에 가까운 양상으로 존재하는 현상황의 다양함 속에서 한국적 건축을 쉽게 정의하는 것은 불가능해 보인다
낀 세대라 불리는 베이비부머 세대와 한국적 건축이라는 단어는 이런 면에서 많이도 닮아있다.
건축가의 제안
1961년생, 1962년생인 건축주 부부는 보험회사 임원 그리고 교육청 장학사로 근무하고 있다. 어린 시절 시골에서 도시로 상경해 대학을 나와 가족을 꾸미고 도시에 정착한 전형적인 베이비 부머 세대이다. 어린 시절의 가난을 극복하며 급변하는 환경 속에서 앞만을 바라보며 살아온 그들에게 은퇴의 시기가 다가왔다. 자신들의 은퇴 후의 삶을 위한 계획 중 그 첫째가 치열하기만 했던 도시를 떠나 전원에 새로운 보금자리를 마련하는 것이다. 건축주와의 첫 대면에서 받은 인상은 자신을 표현하는데 있어서 '불편해 한다' 라는 것이었다. 자신들이 분류되는 출신학교, 직책, 인맥 등의 사회적 기준들에 대해서는 명확하지만 반대로 자신의 취향, 기호, 스타일과 같이 시간을 가지고 경험하고 다듬어져야할 것들의 표현은 서툴다는 것이다. 어쩌면 이것은 베이비부머 세대들에게 공통적으로 나타나는 특징은 아닐까?
주택의 디자인을 진행하면서 건축주 부부와의 시간을 통해 확인한 바는 그들의 삶에서 체험한 경험의 스펙트럼이 한국의 역사상 어느 세대보다 광범위하다는 것이다. 반대로 이렇게 엄청나게 축척한 경험에 대한 자기화의 과정은 바쁜 삶의 과정 속에서 누락된 것 처럼 보인다. 베이비부머 이후 세대들이 경제적 여유 속에서 다양한 대중문화와 여가를 접하며 그 세대만의 문화를 만들어 낸 것과는 사뭇 다른 양상이다. 그들에게 은퇴는 그 동안 축적된 경험의 스펙트럼을 되돌아 보고 자신들의 삶을 정리하고 규정하는 시간이 되어야 하지 않을까? 아마도 그 규정은 흑과 백의 논의가 아니라 정도를 나타내는 것일 것이다.
건축가로서 베이비부머 건축주에게 제안하는 주택의 핵심은 '관통'과 '가변'이었다. 그동안 경험 한 여러 시간을 넘나들며 자신을 찾아가는 '관통', 다양한 여가를 한정된 공간에서 즐길 수 있는 '가변'. 이 두개의 키워드를 통해 건축은 그 공간을 영위하는 사람에게 자기화의 시간을 제공하는 공간으로 거듭 날수 있지 않을까 한다.
건축주는 앞으로 두 아들에게서 태어날 손주들에게 기억되는 할아버지, 할아버지집에서의 기억들이 특별하고 색달랐으면 하는 바람을 가지고 있다. 이런 바람은 자신을 돌아보며 삶의 여유 속에서 자신의 매력을 자연스럽게 드러낼 때 이루어 질 것이다.
멋진 할아버지집이 인생의 전반기에 미뤄논 삶의 숙제를 즐겁게 풀어나가는 장소가 되길 바란다.

Architect-K(아키텍케이) is an entropic design community. Since its establishment in 2012, we are doing total design incuding Architecture/ Interior/ Furniture/ Arts. 'K' acknowledges the status of the disorder. External environment surrounding the design and the internal movement of design field are not always constant. It seeks to design alternative that can flexibly deal with the change through fading boundaries. This Method is similar to the concept and the constant K of entropy to refer to a specific range. 'K' in Architect-K is Boltzmann constant 'K' and at the same time letter 'K' means all the words it entered.
아키텍케이(architect-K)는 엔트로피적 디자인 집단이다. 2012년 설립이후 건축/인테리어/가구를 포함한 토탈 디자인을 진행하고 있다. 'K'는 무질서의 상태를 인정한다. 디자인을 둘러싸고 있는 외부환경, 디자인 내부의 움직임은 언제나 일정하지 않다. 경계를 허무는 방식을 통해, 변화의 움직임에 유연하게 대처할수 있는 디자인 대안을 추구한다. 이런 작업 방식은 변위를 인정하고 범위를 지칭하는 엔트로피의 개념과 그 상수 K의 특성과 닮아 있다. architect-K의 K는 볼츠만 상수 'K'임과 동시에 알파벳 'K'가 들어가는 모든 단어를 의미한다.

He is the founder of ARCHITECT-K. He graduated from University California, Berkeley with a Master of Architecture. He had worked on FSA(Frederic Schwartz Architects, New York), SPACEGROUP(공간건축, Seoul). He is a Kira(Korea Institute of Registered Architecture) Member.
이기철은 유씨 버클리(U.C.Berkeley) 환경디자인 대학원 건축학석사를 받았다. 미국 뉴욕의 프레데릭 슈왈츠 아키텍츠와 (Frederic Schwartz Architects)와 한국의 공간건축에서 실무를 익혔으며, 2012년 아키텍 케이(Architect-K)를 개소 운영중이다.
