Korean Babyboomer & Korean Architecture
In the modern Korean history, Baby Boomers(born in 1953-1962) are the generations who have experienced the both extreme sides in their lifetime; from the postwar poverty hours to the economic development boom’s time in 70s~80s, from resisting the tyranny of the military government to opening the democratic government, from growing up in Korean Folk Culture and Confucian Values to Capitalist Era of mass culture in the sudden globalization flow. Korean Baby Boomers has lived in all the maelstroms of Korean Modern History, but did not seem to have their own Cultural Keywords or Colors which represents themselves unlike Generation X or Generation 486.
What is the Korean Architecture? The Korean traditional and folk architecture has been disappeared in the course of industrialization and modernization. But it still remains as the spirit of the Korean Architecture. Also, with changed lifestyle, imported Western-Styled Architecture became the big flow in Korean built environment in a short time of the past half-century. Defining "What the Korean Architecture is." in the chaotic diversity seems impossible.
Korean Baby Boomers which called "Ggin Sedae" and Korean Architecture is similar to in this respect.
Architect's Proposal
The Client couple who is bone in 1961 and 1962 has worked as an insurance executive and Board of Education Superintendent. Like typical Baby Boomer Generation, they left countryside to the cities to get education and job opportunity in child hood. Overcoming the poverty of his childhood and looking straight ahead in a rapidly changing environment, he and she met the time to prepare retirement. Planning for life after their retirement is firstly leaving the city and building a new nest on countryside. The impression I got in first meeting with the Client was 'uneasiness' in expression of themselves. For them, social standards like graduated school, social position, social relationship are clear to express, but their own tastes, tendency, and style which are refined with experience and time are clumsy to show. Would it be common to the Baby Boomer Generation?
Designing the house, I confirmed that the spectrum of experience they have in their lifetime is extensively wider than any other generation have in the history of Korea. Conversely, the self-refining process for the experience seems to be missing in the busy life. Otherwise, generation after Baby Boomer had a variety of pop culture and leisure in economic freedom and could create their own culture which is representing their generation. Meanwhile, looking back at them retire maybe the spectrum of experience and organize their lives would not be the time to rule? Perhaps the rule will be indicative of the degree, not black and white debate.
As the architect, I suggested the key word 'penetration' and 'flexibility' for the house to the Baby Boomers Client. 'Penetration'; searching themselves with a journey of experience across multiple time, 'Flexibility'; enjoying a variety of recreation in a limited space. Through the keywords, for people who engage in that space can refine themselves.
Client wants to be remembered as a cool grandpa to his future grandchildren. He hopes that the memory in grandpa house is special for them. This hope can be come true in the time looking back their life and revealing their charm.
I hope that Grandpa's Cool House can help the client to solve the late lifetime homework.
베이비부머와 한국건축
한국현대사에서 베이비부머(1953~1962)세대들은 인생에 걸쳐 양극단의 상황을 경험한 세대 들이다. 전후의 빈곤의 시간에서 경제개발의 호황의 시기를, 군부의 독재정치에 저항해서 민주 정부를 열었고, 토속적 한국문화와 유교적 가치관 속에서 자랐지만 어느새 세계화 흐름 속에 자본주의적 대중문화와 무가치관의 시대에 살고 있다. 베이비부머 세대는 한국현대사의 소용돌이를 모두 관통해 존재하지만 486세대나 X세대와 달리 그들을 대표하는 문화적 키워드나 색깔을 가지고 있지 못한 것처럼 보인다.
한국적 건축이란 무엇일까? 근대화와 산업화의 과정에서 전통적 혹은 토속적 한국건축은 대부분이 사라졌지만 한국건축의 원류로써 여전히 존재한다. 지난 반세기의 짧은 시간동안 새로이 도입된 서구의 건축 역시 한국의 변화된 라이프 스타일과 그 괘를 함께하며 한국의 건축에서 큰 흐름으로 자리하고 있다. 이렇게 혼돈에 가까운 양상으로 존재하는 현상황의 다양함 속에서 한국적 건축을 쉽게 정의하는 것은 불가능해 보인다
낀 세대라 불리는 베이비부머 세대와 한국적 건축이라는 단어는 이런 면에서 많이도 닮아있다.
건축가의 제안
1961년생, 1962년생인 건축주 부부는 보험회사 임원 그리고 교육청 장학사로 근무하고 있다. 어린 시절 시골에서 도시로 상경해 대학을 나와 가족을 꾸미고 도시에 정착한 전형적인 베이비 부머 세대이다. 어린 시절의 가난을 극복하며 급변하는 환경 속에서 앞만을 바라보며 살아온 그들에게 은퇴의 시기가 다가왔다. 자신들의 은퇴 후의 삶을 위한 계획 중 그 첫째가 치열하기만 했던 도시를 떠나 전원에 새로운 보금자리를 마련하는 것이다. 건축주와의 첫 대면에서 받은 인상은 자신을 표현하는데 있어서 '불편해 한다' 라는 것이었다. 자신들이 분류되는 출신학교, 직책, 인맥 등의 사회적 기준들에 대해서는 명확하지만 반대로 자신의 취향, 기호, 스타일과 같이 시간을 가지고 경험하고 다듬어져야할 것들의 표현은 서툴다는 것이다. 어쩌면 이것은 베이비부머 세대들에게 공통적으로 나타나는 특징은 아닐까?
주택의 디자인을 진행하면서 건축주 부부와의 시간을 통해 확인한 바는 그들의 삶에서 체험한 경험의 스펙트럼이 한국의 역사상 어느 세대보다 광범위하다는 것이다. 반대로 이렇게 엄청나게 축척한 경험에 대한 자기화의 과정은 바쁜 삶의 과정 속에서 누락된 것 처럼 보인다. 베이비부머 이후 세대들이 경제적 여유 속에서 다양한 대중문화와 여가를 접하며 그 세대만의 문화를 만들어 낸 것과는 사뭇 다른 양상이다. 그들에게 은퇴는 그 동안 축적된 경험의 스펙트럼을 되돌아 보고 자신들의 삶을 정리하고 규정하는 시간이 되어야 하지 않을까? 아마도 그 규정은 흑과 백의 논의가 아니라 정도를 나타내는 것일 것이다.
건축가로서 베이비부머 건축주에게 제안하는 주택의 핵심은 '관통'과 '가변'이었다. 그동안 경험 한 여러 시간을 넘나들며 자신을 찾아가는 '관통', 다양한 여가를 한정된 공간에서 즐길 수 있는 '가변'. 이 두개의 키워드를 통해 건축은 그 공간을 영위하는 사람에게 자기화의 시간을 제공하는 공간으로 거듭 날수 있지 않을까 한다.
건축주는 앞으로 두 아들에게서 태어날 손주들에게 기억되는 할아버지, 할아버지집에서의 기억들이 특별하고 색달랐으면 하는 바람을 가지고 있다. 이런 바람은 자신을 돌아보며 삶의 여유 속에서 자신의 매력을 자연스럽게 드러낼 때 이루어 질 것이다.
멋진 할아버지집이 인생의 전반기에 미뤄논 삶의 숙제를 즐겁게 풀어나가는 장소가 되길 바란다.

바다 풍경, 도시 리트리트 건축 (Retreat Architecture)
A cafe is not anymore just a commercial space. The user’s action taking place is quite public and open. The Cafe should serve as libraries, as spaces to meet friends or colleagues, as concert halls, as spaces to recharge or seek inspiration, and even as children’s playgrounds. In Korea, Cafe has been a popular architecture category in recent times as an easy-taking Instagram shoot place. With the trend, cafes can be the place to let people feel the value of architecture.
We allocated two triangles that were derived by considering the shape of an obtuse angle along the lines of the site. The allocation is the strategy to make two different ocean views of East & South, providing the experiences of going back and forth between the two triangles of different levels. In contrast to the notion that the intended scenery would open up if the user follows the neatly organized circulation path, the potential for choice was necessary for determining the circulation inside the building, and there is an unfamiliar feeling that the impression is continuously cross-edited according to their selection. As a result, the experiences from the scenery of the ocean in the intended spaces become ‘Moments of Space,’ which are instantly recognized and operated by users. In that process, the café’s function, like libraries, salons, concert halls, and recharging spaces, has been exceptional in their daily lives.
The next is the architect’s clear intention to achieve the quality of space: In order to enhance their immersion level, the interior and exterior materials are simplified to exposed concrete; the newly-blended and created terrazzo floor, in addition to the ceiling surfaces divided by formwork lines as the vertices, are to give a floating color and texture; the walls that control the reverberation of sound by rendering the concrete surface uneven with chamfer strips; 25mm-thick steel curtain walls applied to avoid blocking the view; the part connected to the transom is flattered to appear as a single member; and the poster-tension method was applied to the 20m-long hypotenuse open to the sea for a dramatic experience.
Two Triangles offers an enchanting encounter with nature through the geometric plan, ascending circulation, and a palette of monotones.

투 트라이앵글(Two Triangles)은 대도시 울산의 근교 해안에 위치한 근린생활시설(카페)이다. 최근 들어 시민들은 커피 산업 및 문화의 성장과 더불어 코로나 19 감염병의 세계적 대유행을 겪게 되면서 일상 속 휴식처에 대한 관심을 갖기 시작하였고, 대도시 근교에는 이를 충족시켜주는 다양한 유형의 카페가 생겨나고 있다. 즉, 커피 한 잔의 비용으로 농밀한 쉼을 추구하는 공간에 대한 관심과 수요는 이전과는 다른 다양한 형태와 공간의 건축이 생성될 수 있는 계기를 마련해 주고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 투 트라이앵글의 건축은 한 두 명의 클라이언트가 아닌 불특정 다수를 위한 리트리트 건축을 목표로 대지가 가진 환경적 조건을 보다 적극적으로 해석하여 적용한 건축이다.
Two Triangles는 동해 바다가 바라보이는 작은 언덕 위에 위치하고 있다. 동쪽으로는 대자연의 망망대해가, 남쪽으로는 삶의 터전인 작은 어항이 보이는 유사하지만 다른 두 바다 풍경을 마주하고 있다. 유사하지만 각기 다른 바다 전망을 가진 리트리트의 건축으로 치환하기 위해 ‘한 꼭지점에서 반대편 선분을 바라보는 도형’인 삼각형을 공간의 기본 단위로 조직하였다. 즉, 두 개의 삼각형으로 사다리꼴 평면을 구성하여 대지에 존재하는 동, 남측의 바다 전망 모두를 바라볼 수 있게 하였다. 그리고 이용자의 다양한 공간적 경험과 바다를 바라보는 다양한 조망점을 만들기 위해 서로 다른 높이를 가진 공간을 수직적으로 배열하여 각기 다른 전망과 높이를 가지는 4개의 삼각형 공간을 형성하였다. 또 동선은 이들 4개의 삼각형 공간의 빗변을 따라 각 꼭짓점에 이르게 구성함과 동시에 조망을 위한 공간은 비워두었다.
